Digital illustration of a young woman with long brown hair and green eyes, looking directly at the viewer, with a serious expression. She is holding a cigarette in her right hand, wearing a black off-the-shoulder top, and has gold nails, rings, and a choker. Two other illustrated women are in the background, one with light blonde hair, wearing purple headphones and a purple jacket, and the other with light hair, partially visible.

Self Portrait

I started this piece in 2023 just after I had finished the Dutch equivalent to highschool and was taking a gap year. I can’t really remember the motivation behind this one, but it is one of the only times I have drawn myself since being a little kid. I don’t know why, but drawing myself feels kind of embarassing and pathetic. Like I think a lot of myself enough to be in a painting. But I realized that people draw and paint everything they see, whether “worthy” to being pictured or not. And it made me want to start this piece.

I had taken three different photos and put them together as an image and then referenced that to draw. I started rendering each face individually, but I should have done every step for each face all at once. Because now as you can see, the light sources are at different angles for both of the figures I’ve drawn so far. Whereas I wanted them to be all in one image, not like I’ve just collaged them together. But I don’t think I will change the rendering because I am quite pleased with how it’s turned out. I wasn’t really very interested in finishing this piece, but looking at it now, I really like how I did certain details in the coloring. And I don’t have blue hair by the way, I just thought it was fun!
