January 2021

This piece I made for the birthday of Xion, a member of the kpop group Oneus. I referenced his teaser photo for their album “Devil”. I thought the metal spike cage he was wearing was really cool and would make a good challenge to draw, because of the reflective details. You can see I have three images here, the first one is the raw drawing with no digital touches. I only used color pencils for the entire traditional process of this piece. You can see in the next photo that I distorted the image using the liquify tool on procreate to create more interest and fill some parts that felt a bit empty. Then in the last photo, I smoothed out all of the colored pencil texture. Which looking at all of them now, I think I like the middle one with a bit more texture the most, but that shows how my art preferences have changed since then. Even though I made this piece quite a while ago, it is still one of my favorites. I really love the contrast bewteen the blue and red, the bright vivid colors versus the stark pale face and the flowy elements versus the sharp details. I did not intentionally make him so pale, but I did not have a wide range of skintone colored pencils back then and was afraid of shading too hard or messing up the tone. But I think it ended up working well for the piece in the end.
